Going away to college for the first time? Besides your clothes and other essentials, you may be wondering what items you should bring for a successful college experience.
Before you do anything else, consult your school’s website. Most colleges have a list of suggested items to bring and a list of things you should definitely leave at home. Approved and forbidden items vary widely by school, so be sure to check. Also, be aware that some colleges have items that you can borrow (vacuum), rent (micro-fridge), or buy (futon) from the school, saving you money and the trouble of transporting them.
As you get ready for your new scholastic adventure, consider the following items:
bedside caddy – Even if you’re on the top bunk, you can safely keep your phone, water bottle, and glasses close by while you sleep.
eye shade – Be prepared for your roommate’s late-night entrances. Masks come with all sorts of features, including adjustable straps, convex eyecups, and memory foam.
first-aid kit – You don’t want to drive to the pharmacy for antacid at midnight! Include a pain reliever, eye drops, heating pad, etc.
lighting – A desk lamp that can be adjusted for brightness and light temperature will prevent eyestrain. Also, a clip-on book light is a thoughtful way to study late at night without disturbing your roommate.
lockbox/small safe – Even if you’re careful to lock your room, you’ll feel better knowing that your passport, jewelry, and credit cards are secure.
mattress topper – Dorm mattresses tend to be hard and covered in plastic, so bring some comfort with you. Choose from pillow-top, memory foam, and more.
noise cancellers – Dorms, coffee shops, and even libraries can be noisy places, so if you need a quiet atmosphere to study, bring headphones, earbuds, or basic ear plugs.
power bank/portable charger – You may be away from your room for 15 hours day, and you’ll be competing for outlets with everyone else at school. Don’t run out of power!
roadside assistance plan – If you lock your keys in the car or break down on the highway, you’ll be thankful you have backup. Find out if you will be covered by your parent’s plan—especially if your college is in a different state—or purchase a student membership.
sewing kit – When a button comes off your favorite shirt, you can fix it in minutes. Include needles, several colors of thread, safety pins, and hem tape.
shower caddy – Easily carry your shampoo, soap, and razor from your room to the shower.
shower shoes – How many people on your hall are using the same shower? Enough said.
surge protector power strip – Older dorm rooms are notorious for not having enough outlets for the modern student, so bring a power strip that will also protect your electronic devices.
